What Is Umbilical Hernia?

An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine pushes through the umbilical ring, a small opening in the abdominal muscles near the bellybutton (navel). Umbilical Hernias occur most commonly in new-borns, and most of these Umbilical Hernias typically closes by itself, before the child turns 5 years old. In an infant, an Umbilical Hernia may be especially evident when the infant cries, causing the bellybutton to protrude.

With that being said, Umbilical Hernias can also appear during adulthood, which are typically caused by issues with abdominal muscles in later life. Some of these issues include increased pressure on the abdominal muscles, such as during pregnancy or when lifting heavy objects.

Symptoms

When is an Umbilical Hernia Considered Dangerous?

If you suspect that your baby has an umbilical hernia, you should highlight this to your paediatrician or consult a Hernia Specialist to confirm your suspicion. You should seek emergency care if your baby already has an umbilical hernia and:

#1

Appears to be in pain

#2

Starts to vomit

#3

Has tenderness, swelling or discoloration at the site of the hernia

Treatments

What are the treatments available for Umbilical Hernia?

Surgery is necessary to push the protruding tissue back in place, remove any scar tissue, and adhere a surgical mesh on the hernia’s opening to prevent recurrence.

Our Hernia Surgeon in Singapore Dr Kan offers the full spectrum of surgical treatments for Umbilical Hernias, including minimally invasive/keyhole procedures such as laparoscopic Umbilical hernia repair, which is typically the most common choice amongst experienced surgeons.

Advantages of this approach compared with open hernia repair include a lower risk of infection and a faster rate of recovery.
